Urology Center of Iowa is excited to announce that we now provide in-house urologic ultrasounds. The ability to perform ultrasounds right here in the clinic makes care more convenient and efficient for our patients.
Why Are Urologic Ultrasounds Important?
Urologic ultrasounds are non-invasive imaging tests that use sound waves to create pictures of the urinary tract. They are an important tool used in the process of diagnosing urinary tract issues and monitoring treatment. Conditions that may require a urologic ultrasound include:
- Microhematuria: Also known as microscopic hematuria, this condition is when there is blood in the urine, but it’s not visible to the naked eye. Ultrasounds can help identify potential causes of microhematuria, such as tumors, stones, or infections.
- Kidney Stones: Ultrasounds are a primary tool for finding kidney stones. They can identify the size, location, and number of stones, which can be used to plan the best treatment.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Ultrasounds can examine the kidneys and bladder more thoroughly to check for signs of infection and look for any abnormalities that might lead to recurrent UTIs.
- Prostate Enlargement: For men, an ultrasound can be used to measure the size of the prostate gland and look for any irregularities. This may be done if a digital rectal exam or PSA test is abnormal.
- Bladder Issues: The bladder can be thoroughly examined, which is helpful in diagnosing conditions like bladder cancer, bladder stones, or bladder dysfunction.
- Reproductive Health: Urologic ultrasounds can be performed on men to evaluate problems with the testicles, prostate, or even the penis in certain situations.
Benefits of In-House Urologic Ultrasounds
Having the ability to perform urologic ultrasounds in the office offers several advantages for our patients:
- Convenience: Patients can receive comprehensive care under one roof, eliminating the need to travel to multiple locations for diagnostic tests.
- Timeliness: In-house ultrasounds allow for quicker scheduling and faster results, leading to more prompt diagnosis and treatment. The results are also seamlessly integrated into our own systems, eliminating the need for record transfers from imaging centers.
- Continuity of Care: Your urologist can closely monitor and manage your care without the communication challenges that may come from having more than one facility involved.
